This is my sculpture. The frame is built from 2 quarter inch steel rods bent into spheres and welded. It was then covered in chicken wire to allow the glass to have a surface to adhere to. I researched cutting glass bottles on youtube, which had a multitude of varying options from wire to candles. I found the candle route was the most effective for me but the scoring of the glass took the most strength as it was easy to slip off the sides of the bottle. After washing and removing the bases of over 150 bottles, I began assembly using clear sealant as an adhesive. The material was extremely unique and quite beautiful with light shining through it and has inspired me to continue working with the medium. It was fairly tacky upon application and achieved relative strength within 24 hours. At 72 hours, it was extremely durable yet strong. Part of me wished to have experimented filling the glass bottoms with the sealant as well, due to how clearly you can see into the sculpture otherwise. I was afraid had I done that, that the light wouldn’t be bright enough to get through. I felt the whole project was fairly successful. The craft was rougher than I wanted but the piece remains intriguing and something people want to touch.

This was a project that tested my patience as I could get nothing to work out the first few weeks. The model I kept attempting to use as my reference was to big for 123Catch and refused to make a completed mesh that I could print. Even when attempting to use my own head, the program struggled to put that together as well. What I ended up doing was experimenting with a 3D model I had created in Maya to understand the process and how successful it would be. The model exported into 123D Make extremely easy and now gave me a new medium to work in with my projects. I wish I would have sanded my model down during the process of assembling to smooth out edges farther, as the super glue dried so quickly it was hard to line up the pieces perfectly. I plan to model Big Jays head next and attempt the same process and take what I learned.

This rocket ship exists as a relic to something that once was. This ship was once a prized possession that was disposed of and left to rust and be forgotten about. The rough exterior describes the journeys and adventures this ship has experienced. It’s mustache and monocle create welcoming feelings that make one want to learn new stories about this Ship’s life. This is the best amount of artistic bs I was able to establish the rocket ship. Really though, it’s just a fun sculpture that has no other meaning or depth. It is art for art’s sake, the visual enjoyment of a piece of work that only exists at face value.
